The Poor House which is still standing in Clifton Street has now been fully renovated,
the house was first opened in 1774, the local architect who worked on it
was Robert Joy. The name has now been changed to The Belfast Charitable Society. The charitable society now takes care of the elderly, the building itself is known as Clifton House and there are now some 144 residents living there. Clifton House is one of the few georgian buildings left in Belfast. When Clifton House was being built there were only open fields and meadows to the north of the house this area is were the Antrim and Crumlin Roads are now. |
